Holy Cow Cupcakes

13 Oct

If you are looking for an extremely personal baker, you must make a stop at Holy Cow Cupcakes.  Karen, owner, and I have tweeted back and forth, she’s donated cupcakes to a fundraiser (Wii Olympics) that I hosted two years ago, and she now has moved her location to less than a block from my house.  We don’t really know each other on a personal level by any means, but I like to purchase from local vendors, especially when they are directly in my neighborhood.

But, for a while, I hadn’t stopped in.  I had bought cupcakes multiple times from her previously, but it was because she is extremely friendly and the cupcakes are good.  They weren’t great, but they were decent.  But something has changed.  There is a newness not only to the store, but I am changing my mind and shifting good to delicious.  This could be dangerous due to the proximity of my house.

Why the change?  Well, I always thought the frosting was good, but the cupcakes tended to be dry at times.  It wasn’t consistent enough for me.  But now, things are different.  In the best way possible.

After dining at Scratch Truck the other day, I made my way inside for the best cupcake to come out of that shop.  The pumpkin spice.  It is tender and delicious.  Holding the right amount of spice in the pumpkin cake and a creamy, not overly sweet cinnamon spice cream cheese frosting.  I have to admit, it didn’t take me long to eat this one.  And I now have to admit I’ve gone back multiple times for more.

It gets worse.  And by worse, I obviously mean better.  I bought a cinnamon roll that day too.  I ate it for dessert that evening – it was one of the best I’ve had.  No photos of it for you, but I encourage you to buy one if they are available – which is not daily.  Both times I went back for pumpkin spice, I also went back for cinnamon rolls, but left only with pumpkin spice.  I’ll keep stalking looking until I get another one in my hands.  And I probably won’t share that one like I did the first time with hubs (no offense hubs…I’m just sayin’).

I love the Pumpkin Spice. I also have had multiple other cuppies I really liked …Peanut Butter Fudge, Peanut Butter Banana, Salted Carmel and the daily…Cocao Bliss. I haven’t had the cinnamon rolls but I’m gonna. Another wonderful item is the brownies; both the carmel and peanut butter. OMG!!

I definitely have had others in the past, but as mentioned, the cake had been dry. I did like the flavor of the maple bacon. And I’ve had the Guiness chocolate one too – delicious! You must try the cinnamon buns – I heard there are some today if you can stop by! Thanks for reaching Alice!

Friend, you should come by when I’m working! Any Saturday after 1pm. If you haven’t tried the salted caramel, you SHOULD! It’s a Monday cuppie. Strikes me as something you’d love. If you come visit me sometime I’ll get you a cuppie on me 🙂

I’m in! Maybe I’ll swing by this Saturday – we are celebrating all things fall so that means a pumpkin cuppie is in order! And if you see a cinnamon roll, save it! Karen said they had some today, but I don’t think I’ll make it over before our show tonight…thanks friend!

That sounds delicious. If you’re ever traveling down Allisonville Rd just South of 116th St. you should stop in at The Sweet Life. Incredible cupcakes and pies there.

I went here a few days after reading this review and wandered out of the store with a dozen cupcakes, two of each kind. LOL! I was the best Mom ever for a good couple weeks. 🙂

I’m not big on sweets (I really have to be in the mood) but I had the butterscotch cupcake and it was amazing! Can’t wait to go back and try a salted carmel one.

I’m sure Holy Cow thought you were a great customer too! The salted caramel is good, had it over Halloween. But really, you’ve got to try the cinnamon buns. Delish!
